Five good reasons to electrify your fleet.2

Costs – Five years without tax (in Germany anyway), lower maintenance costs and lower energy expenses mean that electric cars can reduce operating costs substantially. That’s good news for companies that have lots of vehicles.

VW’s e-up! model, for example, uses only 11.7 kilowatt hours to go 100 kilometres. As the price of fuel goes up, the cost advantage of electric power goes up too.

Environment – Electric cars make no noise. They don’t stink, emit toxic fumes, or burn up valuable resources. When charged with eco-electricity, an e-car’s carbon footprint is only one gram of CO2 per kilometre.

So they are attractive to all companies that place a priority on sustainability and corporate responsibility. Large companies, especially, can sustainably reduce fleet emissions.

Reliability – Electric cars require fewer repairs. Things that wear out, such as exhaust pipes, spark plugs, air filters, fuel pumps, belts, clutches, and motor and transmission oil are things of the past. So visits to the garage are kept to a minimum.

This makes it easier for fleet managers to anticipate costs and plan the availability of vehicles.

This is a real benefit for people who think strategically.


Dynamics – Even compared to economical internal combustion engines, with lower displacement and torque, electric cars are real sprint kings – without motor noises or bothersome vibrations. The uniformly high torque insures a strong start. The e-up! delivers 210 Newton metres, which is standard for its class. Electric vehicles are lively machines when it comes to city driving conditions, when speed is important. Doctors, couriers and police officers will be happy to have one.

Management meeting

I discuss with department heads how and why we want to slowly convert the fleet into electric vehicles. The technology probably means that we will be able to reduce operating costs significantly. We are all assuming the price of oil will continue to rise, that fuel will just get more expensive, while batteries get cheaper.

A talk with the landlord

I discuss the possibility of installing additional charging stations in the underground car park with the supervisor of our office building. We want to expand our e-up! fleet, but we have to be ready for them. We will have to share the cost of the charging stations, but it will pay off in the long run.


I meet with a friend from another company for lunch. We get to the topic of e-mobility. He says: ‘At our company we can now choose an electric vehicle as our company car.’ I feel this confirms my decision.

Ride to customer meeting

I visit our important customers on a regular basis, just to stay in touch. I recently started to set a good example by driving to these meetings with the e-up! It really is a perfect car for the city. It takes off at intersections, and is a lot of fun to drive!

After Hours

I park the car in the underground garage and plug it into the charging station. There are more e-up! with our company logo close by. Pretty soon they will get company. I am even thinking about converting the entire fleet to electric vehicles one day.

Checking the statistics

With my morning cup of coffee I review the numbers from the day before. We had 126 vehicles on the road. They clocked up 11,072 kilometres. That comes to over 1,000 litres of fuel. It is high time we look into electric vehicles.

We discuss our strategy of switching to electric vehicles with the controlling department. The way things look now, we could markedly reduce costs for operations and maintenance.

In the stairway

By coincidence, I see Martha Müller from our public relations department. She told me I could count on her support in the plan. She says these days, a company can hardly afford to ignore sustainability issues or a modern fleet. I agree.

Daily meeting

This is a regular gathering of our drivers and their representatives. They reveal that they were initially sceptical of our plan to introduce electric cars. But after the first test drives with the e up!, they felt much better. They say the vehicles are quiet, compact and that their range is just fine.

The commute home

On the way home, I stop by an auto dealership to check out the latest models. Long hoods, chrome exhaust pipes, and lots of power. Hmm... or is my next company car going to be electric?

The first drive

Our company acquired a few e-up! for the fleet. They asked for volunteers to drive them. I simply wanted to try. I never regretted it. I have never driven such a quiet car. This is very pleasant when you are driving all day.


I used to think that electric automobiles only made sense in the city. But even a drive from Düsseldorf to Bochum, and back, is not a problem. That’s 115 kilometres. I could have even gone on to Dortmund.

Lunch break

Speaking of a break: when I go to lunch I usually park in a charging station because there is always one available. So we are both charging our batteries: me at the lunch table, the vehicle at the power point!

Short ride

I never thought an electric car could be this fast for city driving. You are a match for anyone at the traffic lights. It feels a bit like a go-kart. No wonder the boss warned us this morning about speed traps.


That's it for today. I must say, driving the e-up! is a lot of fun. If our company goes ahead with plans to switch to green electricity for the charging stations, the cars are also easier on the environment.
